When we were recently invited to do some sampling at Seviche and Sonoma, we enthusiastically agreed to try out their happy hours. What we ended up discovering were a couple great places in Downtown Pittsburgh that offer quality, class and great taste…all at prices that may surprise you.
Shortly before our great experience at Sonoma Grille, we were completely swept away at their sister downtown establishment, Seviche. Seviche is a great stop for anyone in search of great tapas and happy hours in Pittsburgh with a hip, classy vibe, and affordability. They serve up seven $5 tapas plates from 5 until 7pm Monday through Friday, and also feature $3 beers, $4 glasses of wine, and $5 signature cocktails. When we learned that they also have their happy hour on Saturday nights from 10 pm until midnight with the same great deals, we already started making future plans!
Let’s first chat about the tapas and drinks. In a word…perfection! Beautifully presented and extremely tasty! We may not be food critics, but we know great food when we taste it. Some of our favorites included the Asian Salmon Tartare, the Pork Empanadas, and the Chicken Tostadas. The Salsa Verde that came with the Pork Empanadas was an especially flavorful surprise. As for the beverages, we sampled their Mango Mojito, Honeydew Martini and Brazil’s national drink, the Caipirinha – all delicious!
While savoring the tastes and enjoying the Latin-inspried atmosphere, we had the opportunity to speak with their head chef, Jeff Caulkins, who explained Seviche’s dedication to using local and sustainable ingredients. “We continue to work along side companies like Penn’s Corner Farm Alliance to bring what our PA farmers work so hard to grow right to our front door.” says Jeff. This also keeps more of our hard earned money right here in Pittsburgh, and that just compounds the value! And just as happy hour ends on Thursday, you also get the added bonus of free live music with a Latin jazz band…which reminds us of even more! On Mondays, you can stop in for free Salsa dance lessons from 9:00-10:00pm.
In addition to their happy hour, they also offer their “Chef’s Table”, a seven course tour through their choices of seviche, as well as three more courses prepared by Jeff, or their sous chef Steve, all priced at just $38 per person. “We wrap it up with one of our signature desserts, and I can honestly say that I haven’t seen a better deal in town” says Chef Jeff, and we couldn’t agree more.
With happy hour deals, an incredible “Chef’s Table”, a $12 wine flight, and their nightly drink specials, Seviche is the perfect melding of value and quality, and epitomizes what it means to be Living Pittsburgh. We look forward to finding the time to go back often!
