Wholey’s Market in the Strip District has been in the business of selling fresh fish, seafood, poultry and meat since 1912. They pride themselves on providing high quality food in the Pittsburgh area, and work hard every day to do just that. Wholey’s Market also offers low-cost shipping to all 50 states, with some packages arriving in one or two business days.
Their Value
Every week, Wholey’s website offers great weekly specials, but every day you can find reasonably priced items all over their store, including seafood, cheeses, potatoes, deli meats, poultry, produce, and even seasonal flowers. Stop by often to take advantage of their great everyday deals.
Their History
Wholey’s is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year, yet the fundamental values it possessed since its start in 1912 haven’t changed. In the early 1900’s, Robert Leo Wholey traveled along Carson Street, selling fruit for a local company, and in 1912, he opened the McKees Rocks Butter and Egg Store. The business steadily grew and eventually turned into the very Wholey’s Seafood Market in Pittsburgh’s Strip District that we all know today. Besides focusing on family values, Wholey believed in quality products from the start.
Four of five brothers, Bob, Sam, Jim and Dan work in various areas of the company. Sam’s wife, Jeanne, helps with the company as well. Although Wholey’s has additional employees besides the original members, the business is still run in a family fashion.
“We are fortunate to have many teammates who have been with us for years and feel like family; our experienced fish cutters have 30 to 40 years of service,” says Jeanne Wholey, Director of Human Resources at Wholey’s Market. “That kind of knowledge base is invaluable to our customers – they trust us to point them in the right direction when making a purchase. Every single piece of fish that leaves this store contains our business’ and our own reputation.”
Their Customers
Frequent customers deliver an array of positive feedback about Wholey’s. Some customers reminisce about their visits to the store as a child with their parents, and others continue to take their own children to see the light-up fish.
“They love the Walt Disney atmosphere with our accordion player, balloon artists, homemade bakery items and live fish tanks,” Jeanne said. “So many vendors in the strip offer great value-the stores, the street vendors, it’s a fun, friendly enjoyable shopping experience.”
